This month, I'd like to highlight some of the newest additions to the matrix
of examples on the WebQuest page. I'm plowing through many pages
submitted to the site, some of which have been sitting in my inbox for over
a year.

I'm please with what I'm seeing. And I think that it helps all of us to have
more good examples readily available. We'll see some of the cooler ones
tonight.

The matrix of examples on the WebQuest page is the single most popular
destination on my site. It has grown to include almost 350 sites, and the
list grows more and more selective all the time. Here's the entry to the
matrix.

BernieD asks, "Have you all visited here within the last three weeks?"

JenW says, "yes"
ChrisK says, "yes"
CynthiaM says, "yes"

BernieD exclaims, "Well... I guess that's all. Good nite everyone!"

ChrisK laughs
Judi-2 hopes that's not all :-)
BJB exclaims, "oh, no you don't!"

JenW says, "actually we visited here at the Classroom Connect
Conference"

BernieD says, "Ah. Well.... let me point out some favorites."

Galapagos: Suspended in Time is a newly submitted example. I was
immediately attracted to it because as an 8 year old I saw a Disneyland
special on the islands and have been fascinated by them ever since.

This WebQuest is designed for Middle and High School.

BernieD says, "Some advice... minimize the Tripod thingie, don't closeit
or it will keep coming back."

BernieD says, "Notice that this gorgeous piece of work is more
Question-oriented than Task. Ordinarily I like taskish thingsbetter, but
this one has a lot of substance."

BernieD asks, "What do ustedes think?"

BJB [to Bernie]: "Ustedes?"
BernieD says, "Spanish for y'all."
JenW says, "lol - I was wondering"
BJB [HelpDesk] smiles...thanks.

ChrisK says, "Like you said, this is a great example of a question-oriented
quest... and angle that I am having my students take in the creation of their
webquests."

JenW says, "I especiallyl like the wording on the rubric"

BernieD says, "The danger with wrapping things around a question is that
it can turn into a mere retelling task. This one goes beyondthat."

BernieD asks, "Making up for lost time... ready for another?"

LynneM has arrived.
ChrisK [to BernieD]: "sure"

SueMR says, "ready"

The next WebQuest I'd like to show is about Ancient Civilizations. What I
like about it is the use of simulated diary-keeping as a task. See what you
think.

BernieD says, "Ooops... I snagged the wrong one. My bad."

BernieD projects the URL:
http://raven.jmu.edu/~hardengm/quest.html

BernieD says, "This one is very pretty, no? And nicely written."

BernieD asks, "Anyone have any comments?"

SueMR says, "I like the idea of the downloadable task sheets. They can
be modified by teachers"

JenW says, "nice site"

BernieD says, "Yes... this one does a nice job of scaffolding the

process."

JenW says, "webquests are looking muchmoresophisticated"

BernieD says, "(Well.. some are.)"

JenW says, "smile - you are right"

BernieD says, "I've got another lined up in this 78 rpm version."

The next new addition is all about Web Design. It puts the topic into a very
applied, careerist orientation. I suspect that the question "Why do we have
to learn this?" will never come up during this lesson.

SueMR says, "the animation and graphics are a grabber"

ChrisK asks, "is it me or do the graphics take a long time to load?"

BernieD says, "There's a hotbed of activity in Iowa at one of the teacher
support centers there. Several other good onesappearon the matrix from
there."

BernieD says, "It's not you, it's a slowish site."

SueMR says, "I am using a T1 connection - cable modem"

BernieD says, "We don't know how long it takes you to get loaded."

SueMR says, "It was a speedy upload at this end."

BernieD says, "In the Process section there is again some nice
scaffolding."

SueMR exclaims, "I must join the K to 3 resources shortly!"

SueMR asks, "What is meant by scaffolding?"

BernieD says, "Yes... and since everyone's been cooling their heels
waiting for me since 4, I think we need to wrap this up."

BernieD says, "Scaffolding in this case means worksheets and other
guides used as temporary helps to aid students in acting smarter than
they are."

SueMR exclaims, "Thank you again. I know you have had a busy week!"

BernieD says, "Thanks to all for coming and staying this long. I'll beon
time next month."
