BJ [to Ton]: "welcome!"
BernieD says, "Step right in, Ton. (You're actually in.)"
BernieD says, "Small group this time."
Judi arrives ready to help carrying all the information you'd ever want to know about TAPPED IN on her trusty palm pilot. Judi waves
BJ [HelpDesk] waves to Judi
BJ drops 2001/08/23 WebQuests-Summer Retrospective (recording). BernieD waves to Judi
JaceH arrives from nowhere. JaceH's personal recorder follows JaceH to here. SueMR has arrived. Sue's Recorder (recording) has arrived. BernieD says, "A special welcome to the three new faces here (and to your familiar face, Karen."
BJ says, "hi, Sue."
KarenRL blushes.
LewisA says, "BJ just added your file to the art web site page on Web Based Resources at http://ejw.i8.com"
SueMR says, "hello everyone"
BJ [to Lewis]: "thanks!"
WalkerM arrives from nowhere. WalkerM's personal recorder follows WalkerM to here. LewisA says, "Hi Karen, Sue, Walker, and Bernie"
TonK says, "Just lost my textwindow"
KarenRL says, "Hello Lewis"
BJ [to Ton]: "you ok now?"
JaceH goes OUT. JaceH's personal recorder (recording) goes OUT. BernieD says, "Room is filling up. Someone flip on the A/C please."
TonK says, "Ok"
BJ says, "how about if we get started because I know Bernie always has lots to share..."
BJ says, "we usually start our ASO discussions with introductions..."
WalkerM has arrived. BJ says, "I'm an art teacher in Pennsylvania and a staff for TAPPED IN"
BernieD projects AboutB. I'm Bernie Dodge and I'm a professor at San Diego State University in the Department of Educational Technology. For the last four years I've been involved with San Diego Unified School District's two Challenge Grants (which are heavily about WebQuests).More recently I've started work on a Preparing Tomorrow's Teachers to Use Technology grant in which we'll be trying out some new ways to introduce teachers to computing. More than you'd ever want to know about me can be found at http://edweb.sdsu.edu/people/bdodge/bdodge.html
BJ [HelpDesk] waits for everyone to introduce themselves
KarenRL says, "Hi, I'm Karen Lemmons, library media specialist at a Detroit (Michigan) public elementary school."
TonK feels excited, first time on line here
Judi is Judi Fusco, community director, researcher here. (I love WQ's!)
BJ [to Ton]: "can you project your intro again, please?"
TonK says, "Just tried to project my intro but it didnt work Im afraid Ill try again"
LewisA says, "I am already an hour late getting home from the my job as the Special Collections Librarian at Emporia State University, so til next time, TAKE TIME TO SMELL THE ROSES."
TonK projects Intro TonK. I am Ton Koenraad. I work at the Faculty of Education in Utrecht, the Netherlands. This Department for Teacher Education is part of the Hogeschool van Utrecht (University of Professional Education). I have only limited experience with online sessions. JeffreyT says, "Hi, I'm Jeff Thomas, Technology Coordinator at Kearny High in San Diego. I worked with Bernie at The Teach The Teachers Collaboritive up in Ojai."
LewisA has disconnected. SueMR says, "I am a retired grade 1/2 teacher from Ottawa, Ontario who teaches on an occasional basis. I also offer Tech Workshops to teachers." WalkerM says, "Walker, a research/writer based in McAllen TX -- a la frontera -- 12 m from Mexican border in Rio Grande Valley, tip 'o Texas" BernieD says, "OK! Let's start."
TonK exclaims, "Ok!"
BernieD says, "Tonight we're here to share info about what we did this summer. Workshops, institutes, whatever WebQuesty activity you're aware of. I've got links for things I was directly involved with, but I'm hoping that some of you will provide the content, too."
BernieD asks, "Did anyone here (besides Jeff) take or teach a WQ workshop this summer?"
KarenRL frowns and shakes her head no. SueMR says, "not this summer"
TonK projects Info on Talenquest. I will present a Dutch, national, state-subsidised project
Webquests for foreign language learning in the Netherlands (1) for the
Eurocall Conference (2) in Nijmegen 29-31/08/01.
TonK projects the URL:
BernieD exclaims, "Zowie.... this is a first!"
TonK says, "Sorry about that urlprojection"
SueMR says, "Should we click on English"
BernieD asks, "Since our Dutch is rusty, can you tell us about it, Ton?"
BernieD says, "Great idea, Sue."
TonK says, "Sorry again read about projections"
JaceH has arrived. BJ says, "I think everyone here is familiar with projections, Ton"
JaceH's personal recorder (recording) has arrived. BernieD asks, "Was this a workshop, class, or the start of a website, Ton?"
techtrainer2001 [guest] has arrived. TonK says, "It is a project that will start next academic year."
BJ [HelpDesk] shows JaceH the URL: BernieD asks, "Are you developing training materials specifically for language learning?"
TonK says, "I prepared a note on goals" TonK projects Goals TalenquestProject. Goals of the Dutch Talenquest-project are: improved taskdesign and methodology for realistic, content-oriented, task-based foreign language learning and facilitation of implementation of innovative models for in-service training Deliverables
TonK projects the URL: http://www.talenquest.nl JeffreyT asks, "I like the way you added a link for feedback on the navbar. Have you received any responses yet?"
BernieD says, "Very promising. If you want to take anything from my site and translate it, feel free."
BJ [to Ton]: "when you project a note with a url attached, the url gets projected with the note"
TonK says, "to BernieD: Ge Stoks wrote to you about this"
BernieD says, "Ah. I remember."
TonK says, "Ok, now we have realized the site the next step is to develop the quests"
BernieD says, "Build it and they will come."
BernieD asks, "Well, cool. Anyone else have something to share?"
BernieD says, "I did a Google search looking for other summer WQ workshops and came up with a lot. However, most sites didn't have a public link to what the participants were doing. I've got a few that we can look at, though.""
TonK says, "I would like that"
JaceH projects JaceH. College Teacher working at University of North Florida in Jacksonville, FL.
BernieD says, "The MSD of Warren Township, IN, did an institute this summer. Here's their site."
BernieD projects the URL: http://www.warren.k12.in.us/Lowell/media/Webquests/wqtraining/wqtraining.htm BernieD says, "Can't exactly tell, but this looks like a 1-day or half-day workshop. The goal wasn't to create a lesson, but more to raise awareness."
BernieD says, "There was also a WQ Academy in Michigan. Here's their site:"
BernieD projects the URL: http://warrensburg.k12.mo.us/webquest/class/ SueMR says, "I like the Weather Webquest and the Simple Machines. Fits into our Grade 4 curriculum quite nicely"
BernieD says, "This one starts from the very beginning, and it looks as though the goal is to draft a new WebQuest. That's not easy in 4 days."
TonK asks, "Is my impression right that' s it is more the Edtech people who are involved in training?"
BernieD says, "Usually, but Ed Tech people usually started out as teachers of some other content, I think."
KarenRL says, "I like how he stated what a webquest is not, so there will be no misunderstanding between a treasure hunt and webquest."
TonK says, "Yes, I recognise that but still feel that the discipline perspective is underrepresented"
JeffreyT says, "It seems like there are more and more workshops popping up about how to use existing WebQuests. I wonder how much they got into how to tell a really good WQ from a so-so one."
BernieD agrees with Karen. I need to put a "what a WQ is NOT" page on my site.
MarshaR has arrived. Marsha's Recorder (recording) has arrived. MarshaR has arrived. BernieD says, "Important stuff, Jeff. If they don't get that.... well, that's where all the bad new WebQuests come from."
BernieD says, "I found a number of workshops that were more broadly about information literacy and which included a short detour into WQ territory. Here's a Big 6 workshop that did that."
BernieD projects the URL:
http://www.big6.com/enewsletter/sum_inst.shtml JeffreyT says, "I'm not sure my last comment was sent so if this repeats forgive me. ... I think it is interesting that there are more and more workshops popping up about using existing WQs. I wonder how much they went into how to tell a great WQ from a so-so one."
KarenRL says, "I knew when you mentioned that you would be talking about the workshop I participated in."
BernieD asks, "You were in this one, Karen?"
KarenRL says, "And you're right. We were supposed to do a webquest. What happened was we did a treasure hunt using the Big6."
KarenRL asks, "Yes, you didn't see "the interview with Karen Lemmons?"
BernieD asks, "It wasn't clear from the page exactly what happened. Was it a good experience?"
KarenRL says, "Doing the treasure hunt was a task that consumed the time, so we didn't get to webquests at all."
BernieD says, "Ah, too bad."
SueMR says, "Did you use a special template for your treasure hunt"
KarenRL says, "Yes, because for me, I wanted to do a treasure hunt and I wanted to incorporate the Big6. So it was fine for me. But I did mention to them in the evaluation to do a webquest workshop." KarenRL says, "Basically using the Filamentality treasure hunt template."
BernieD says, "Good for beginners. Easy to outgrow."
KarenRL says, "Yes, I'm ready to do a webquest. I did a few treasure hunts this past school year. I'm ready to move on."
SueMR says, "I see."
BernieD says, "One more workshop... if you've ever seen Annette Lamb on the speaking circuit, you know that she's a small bundle of highly concentrated energy. I came upon a workshop she developed and it's pretty good."
BernieD projects the URL:
http://eduscapes.com/sessions/travel/index.htm SueMR says, "So much information here. I like the ideas for adapting an existing webquest"
TonK wonders if trainers share what practioners find difficult in design process
BernieD says, "What I like about this is that she's specifically talking about adapting existing WebQuests. That makes sense now that there's so many good ones out there (and so many more really bad ones :-("
KarenRL exclaims, "Wow! Impressive!"
SueMR says, "No sense reinventing the wheel"
BernieD says, "Ton... In my experience, the hardest thing is to conceptualize a task that engages higher level thinking. The most time-consuming part is coming up with good links and a sensible process."
MarshaR says, "Do you have any idea of how to find existing ones that tie to the big ideas of content areas---like the unifying concepts in science, or place/location/movement in ss. Big themed things that are narrowly focused that could be adapted into a specific classroom."
BernieD says, "Now that Jeff is back, maybe we can shift gears to the workshop he taught at for three weeks this summer."
TonK says, "Yeah, it's finding a powerful idea and consequent valuable tasks"
BernieD says, "Marsha... I haven't seen anyone index them that way."
KarenRL says, "I remember a fairly good one. This one used The Great Gatsby. The students had to plan a party that reflected the social, economic, music, clothing of that time period."
KarenRL says, "I thought that was a pretty good one, and I don't teach high school."
BernieD exclaims, "That one came out of the online course my wife taught!"
KarenRL exclaims, "Ooh!"
KarenRL says, "I didn't know."
JeffreyT asks, "O.K. Heres one from TTT. This is this teacher's first WebQuest. It isn't completely finished yet but I think hes off to a good start. I like the way that this WebQuest uses the Web. It has some nice animations and some great geological maps. What do you think?" JeffreyT projects the URL:
http://www.teachtheteachers.org/projects/JRichmond/index.htm BernieD exclaims, "Holy smokes!"
BernieD asks, "Did they develop the movie during the workshop or was it pre-existing?"
SueMR exclaims, "WOW!"
JeffreyT says, "He found it somewhere. It is where some of the teachers in the workshop live. In fact the school would get destroyed if this happened."
BernieD says, "Very dazzling. But it's not just glitz. Looks like a solid lesson, too."
MarshaR says, "This is so well thought about. It has realistic elements and content."
BernieD says, "Nice job, Dr. Thomas."
JeffreyT says, "Thank you. I just do what you taught me."
BernieD asks, "Got another favorite?"
JeffreyT says, "This one is for pre-service teachers."
JeffreyT projects the URL: http://www.teachtheteachers.org/projects/NMach/index.htm SueMR exclaims, "I am dazzled by all this!"
BernieD says, "Nada showed me this in Washington DC when we were supposed to be paying attention to a presenter in the front of the room. She's quite proud of it."
JeffreyT says, "I think that it does a good job of showing future teachers how politics impact what goes on in the classroom"
TonK asks, "How do students feel about the role-play elements you often come across?"
BernieD says, "As they say in senior citizen housing, "Depends"."
KarenRL says, "Wow! Good one! Hot subject, too."
JeffreyT says, "here at Kearny they like it because it makes learning fun and relevant"
BernieD says, "If the roles aren't bogus, I think most get engaged in them. Even introverts like me."
TonK says, "Ideally, in language teaching, we prefer authenticity in tasks"
BernieD says, "Bogosity is widespread, though."
JeffreyT says, "Roles that are just added on for the sake of roles always bring down the WQ"
BernieD nods
BernieD says, "Maybe we should show the structure of the workshop these two came from."
JeffreyT says, "Sounds good to me"
TonK says, "Ok"
BernieD says, "This is the context:"
BernieD projects the URL: http://tttc.org/home.html JeffreyT says, "That woman was in my class and did the most amazing WQ but never said a word"
BernieD says, "Picture a private boarding school with sunsets behind mountains, great food, great people, and a high work ethic."
JeffreyT exclaims, "I'd like to repeat the Great Food Comment!"
Judi smiles
BernieD says, "She's already submitted a new design pattern, Jeff. Just yesterday."
Judi . o O ( i was there 3 years ago and I'd still agree with you Jeff ) BernieD says, "Here's the workshop syllabus:"
JeffreyT says, "Wow. I can't wait to see it. She amazes me."
BernieD projects the URL: http://webquest.sdsu.edu/tttc/ BernieD says, "4.5 days of work and fun."
MarshaR asks, "Are there places like this for non-Californian teachers?"
JeffreyT says, "Notice that there are no graphics until Thursday. We were really strong about this and the projects were much better becuase of it."
BernieD says, "There's a link on the bottom line I just added that links to the dozens of WebQuests that were created there this summer."
BernieD says, "This one was open to non-Californians this year, Marsha."
BernieD says, "And hopefully next year, too."
TonK asks, "do teachers join these events on their own initiative?"
BernieD says, "This year it was only partially subsidized, so teachers had to pony up of their own."
JeffreyT says, "The new stuff that Bernie and the Advanced Class did the first week was a great help to the beginners. It cut at least a day off of the process."
BernieD says, "Guess I'll show that one, too, but no time to talk about it."
BernieD projects the URL: http://webquest.sdsu.edu/tttc-adv/ BernieD says, "I think the design patterns stuff will be the subject of a future session here."
JeffreyT says, "every year Bernie comes up with new stuff that make the process of creating WQs easier and easier and the projects get so much better."
BernieD says, "The world is getting smarter, too."
BernieD says, "(always the optimist)"
BernieD says, "With that, we're just about out of time."
TonK says, "subject-specific scaffolding is what worries me at the moment"
JeffreyT says, "Thank You Bernie."
BJ [to Techtrainer2001 [guest]]: "would you like a transcript of this discussion?"
MarshaR asks, "Anywhere to go to work on this during the school year --- physically or in cyberspace?"
BernieD says, "Ah... then you'll like the design patterns direction we're moving in, Ton. We'll have very specific templates and scaffolds coming later this year."
BJ . o O ( if so, type your email now ) TonK says, "perhaps some other time, thanks and bye"
TonK says, "ton.koenraad@feo.hvu.nl"
MarshaR says, "mratzel@bv229.k12.ks.us"
BJ asks, "thanks...anyone else?"
KarenRL says, "Camaraife@aol.com"
JeffreyT has disconnected. BJ says, "thanks, Bernie, for another great discussion"
TonK says, "Good night all, it' s two in the morning here, but I enjoyed it. Ciao"
BernieD says, "Thank you all for coming. Hope to see you again in a future month."
SueMR says, "There is much to peruse here."
KarenRL exclaims, "thanks, Bernie. Goodbye!"
BernieD has disconnected.
