BernieD says, "Thanks, BJ."

DavidW . o O ( small podium )
BernieD projects sci1.
---------------
Tonight's topic is Design Patterns for Science WebQuests.

I've spent some time looking over my database of good WebQuests trying
to list  all the various ways there are to teach science with this
format.

I was surprised to see just how much variety there was, and to notice
again one major gaping hole.

In this hour we'll look at the whole and the hole.
---------------
BernieD asks, "Everybody is ready for projections, no?"

JaniceF says, "Yes"

KrissyL says, "yep"

JasonWr says, "yup"

ChrissS says, "yep"

ScottHM says, "yes"

AdamG says, "Yes"

JessicaLL says, "yes"

Eriko [guest] says, "yes"

MeganR says, "yes"

FredSt says, "yes"

KarenCl says, "yes"

LynneFH says, "yes"

RuthLH says, "ess"

BernieD thinks... next time I'll just ask for the No's.

BernieD projects sci2.
---------------
I've prepared a web page with some of the quests we'll be talking about.
Here it is.
---------------
BernieD projects the URL:

http://webquest.sdsu.edu/dp-science.htm
LynneFH )

BJ [HelpDesk] checks to make sure all the yes's got the projection

LynneFH says, "nope"

JasonWr says, "yes"

KrissyL says, "got it"

JaniceF says, "yes"

Eriko [guest] says, "yes"

JessicaLL says, "yes"

AdamG says, "Yup"

ChrissS says, "yes"

BernieD says, "This is just a sampling of what's out there. You'll
notice from the early alphabeticalness of it that it's not
               even a random sample."

KarenCl says, "yes,"

MeganR says, "got it"

Jan_NS [k-8sci] says, "I just mentioned that to my students today,
Bernie. The need for science designs."

BJ [HelpDesk] shows LynneFH the URL:
  http://webquest.sdsu.edu/dp-science.htm
LynneFH says, "got it thanks"

RuthLH says, "yes"

Jan_NS [k-8sci] cheers for Bernie.

Becky [guest] has arrived.
BernieD says, "Keep this page open, por favor. We'll be looking at as
many of these as time permits."

DavidW nods.
LynneFH says, "ok"

KrissyL says, "looks good"

BernieD says, "Let's start at the top. Take a look at A Cell is a Small City by clicking on that link (rather than me projecting
               it)."

BJ [HelpDesk] shows Becky the URL:
  http://webquest.sdsu.edu/dp-science.htm
BernieD says, "Spend a minute looking it over and thinking about what
other science content might be treated this way."

BernieD asks, "Any thoughts? Reactions?"

Jan_NS [k-8sci] says, "have you considered using science process skills
as some of the design templates, Bernie."

DavidW asks, "What are scienceprocess skills?"

BernieD asks, "As in "the Scientific Method", he said genuflecting?"

Jan_NS [k-8sci] says, "yes, and some as outlined by the National Science
                       Education Standards."

KrissyL says, "When you asked about any other science content that might
be treated in this way, viruses or diseases come to mind."

BernieD says, "Say some more about that, Jan. I think that's ripe
               territory for us."

AdamG has lost his link.
Jan_NS [k-8sci] says, "this design would work for ecosystems and
                       habitats also. Perhaps adaptations, too."

DavidW agrees.
KrissyL says, "In studying how a virus attacks the body and white blood
cells counter-act, I could see the "city planning" fit w/
               this."

BernieD asks, "What would the metaphor be for habitats?"

Becky [guest] asks, "Possibly for the study of the solar system and
                     galaxy?"

Jan_NS [k-8sci] says, "metaphor for habitats could be "No place like
                       home""

AdamG has connected.
JaniceF says, "Being a non-science person I like this approach.  It is
something bigger that I can relate to."

Becky [guest] says, "Looks like you could use this for anything that
                     could qualify as a "system""

SueMR has arrived.
Sue's Recorder (recording) has arrived.
ScottHM has lost his link.
BernieD asks, "I think if we were to generalize this into a design
pattern that other content could be plugged into, one of
the first steps would have to be to pick something that
the object of study is to be compared to. So you're saying
that we could create a WebQuest in which kids compare the
habitat of some species to their own homes?"

Jan_NS [k-8sci] waves to sue

BJ [HelpDesk] shows AdamG the URL:
  http://webquest.sdsu.edu/dp-science.htm
KrissyL nodsin agreement to Becky

BJ [HelpDesk] shows SueMR the URL:
  http://webquest.sdsu.edu/dp-science.htm
Jan_NS [k-8sci] says, "yes that would work"

BernieD asks, "So what might we compare the solar system to in a way
that would deepen our understanding of it?"

Karen [guest] has arrived.
Jan_NS [k-8sci] says, "and would be great for early childhood"

BJ [HelpDesk] shows Karen the URL:
  http://webquest.sdsu.edu/dp-science.htm
Becky [guest] says, "Well, today for example, I compared the stars,
galaxies, and universe to students, classrooms, and
                     the school as a whole"

BernieD says, "(Sounds of headscratching echoes across the land)"

BernieD exclaims, "Cool!"

DavidW says, "I like that"

JaniceF says, "I am stuck"

BernieD asks, "So in your classroom/solar system, the kids are planets
               and you are the star?"

ScottHM has connected.
DavidW grins.
Becky [guest] exclaims, "Oooh, I like that even better--I am ALWAYS the
                         star!"

AdamG says, "I like the idea of trying to bring some of these abstract
ideas down to the students level and their everyday lives."

KarenRL has arrived.
Awa (recording) has arrived.
Jan_NS . o O ( a bit tongue in cheek, that! )
BernieD says, "(and the principal is the black hole at the center of the
               galaxy?)"

DavidW laughs.
Becky [guest] says, "No Comment."

BJ [HelpDesk] shows KarenRL the URL:
  http://webquest.sdsu.edu/dp-science.htm
KrissyL grins

LynneFH says, "lol"

JaniceF asks, "How about government... the president is the sun?"

Becky [guest] says, "Let's not go there..."

Karen [guest] has arrived.
BernieD says, "Too bad the sun is so dim this year."

DavidW . o O ( It is BEST to stay out of the principal's office )
Jan_NS . o O ( everyone needs to check Bernie's personal webpages to
view his talk on our current "sun"! )
LynneFH says, "or just clouded over...."

BernieD says, "Well... in any case, I think the metaphor design pattern
is one that we might consider. I'll be adding it to the
list of design patterns soon and looking for more
               examples."

AdamG has lost his link.
BernieD says, "Let's look at another."

BernieD says, "A lot of good quests are based on controversies. In fact,
in the early days of the WebQuest model, that was the only
               thing we did."

AdamG has connected.
BernieD says, "Take a look at Bowhead Whale Hunting for one of my
               favorite examples."

DavidW nods.
BeverlyK has arrived.
BeverlyK's personal recorder (recording) has arrived.
BernieD asks, "What do we like about this one?"

BJ [HelpDesk] shows BeverlyK the URL:
  http://webquest.sdsu.edu/dp-science.htm
JuneD has arrived.
JuneD's personal recorder (recording) has arrived.
JessicaLL says, "it's a great issue for students to explore and discuss"

Jan_NS [k-8sci] waves to JuneD.

JaniceF says, "I like that it is not a clear cut issue.  The kids really
need to take an interesting position."

AdamG says, "Definately Higher Level- I like the fact that we are
exploring all facets of the problem"

KrissyL says, "I like how in the introduction this webquest encourages
the participants to discuss their personal views before
diving into the quest & assuming roles."

ChrissS says, "i agree krissy"

MeganR says, "The set up of it is student friendly and easy to follow.
Also, it incorporates different uses of technology."

Becky [guest] says, "I like this in that it gets kids to explore
different points of view, plus they learn to
research to back up their opionions"

AdamG says, "I like how you built background knowledge before they
             started the task"

BernieD agrees with Adam and Krissy

Eriko [guest] says, "I agree a higher level, requires multiple
                     perspectives, and deep thought"

KrissyL says, "I also like how the quest encourages the participants to
put their plan into real-world action.  It makes it more
               "realistic" to the students."

BernieD says, "So the key ingredients for this type are that there have
to be contending groups who disagree on some issue with
               science at its core."

KrissyL says, "These types of quests remind me very much of the
"Decisions, Decisions" series by Tom Snyder."

BernieD says, "No accident, Krissy. I was inspired by TSP in my yoot."

DavidW . o O ( Tom Snyder went to Swarthmore College )
KrissyL [to Bernie]: "I agree, these are fun . . ."

BernieD asks, "He's sort of reclusive these days, no?"

DavidW says, "THe company just recently got sold."

AdamG says, "I saw him do a keynote in October"

BernieD asks, "Riverdeep again?"

KarenRL asks, "Really?  Who bought it?"

DavidW . o O ( I'm checking )
DavidW . o O ( Scholastic )
BernieD says, "Wow."

KarenRL exclaims, "wow!"

AdamG says, "Bernie.. I really like the real world piece"

DavidW . o O ( Dec. 21 )
Eriko [guest] says, "yes, but very interesting"

LynneFH exclaims, "that should be interesting!"

KarenRL says, "Talk about a mega company."

KrissyL says, "No kidding - I hope they keep the same level of great
               educational products."

BernieD says, "On to another type. I've found at least 6 examples of
               journalistic approaches to science ed."

KarenRL says, "So do I, but that might be unlikely."

BernieD says, "Take a peek at Organic Chemistry in the News."

BJ [HelpDesk] shows JuneD the URL:
  http://webquest.sdsu.edu/dp-science.htm
Eriko [guest] nods

BernieD says, "I think the merit of quests like this is twofold: first,
kids learn by having to put their understanding in their
own words, Second, it accentuates the relevance of science
by focusing on its impact on the rest of us."

DavidW smiles.
DavidW says, "I like that"

AdamG says, "Sounds good"

KarenRL says, "I like that idea, too."

ChrissS says, "i like the idea of allowing students to be
newscasters....i think that makes the project interesting
               to them"

KrissyL says, "I also liked in this particular quest how the students
had to design a lab as well as a news report."

Jan_NS [k-8sci] says, "very comprehensive approach."

KrissyL asks, "Do you think it would be valuable in a Journalistic quest
to also discuss the role that media can play on the
               public's opinions?"

KarenRL says, "Excellent thought."

BernieD says, "I'm writing up a design pattern for News. I'm not sure if
the same pattern applies to a simulated newscast as the
Task vs. a newspaper or web page."

KrissyL says, "Or would this be adding one other step that isn't
               necessarily "scientific""

BernieD says, "No... I think that's a great idea, Krissy."

LynneFH says, "might not be "scientific" but integrates across
               curriculum"

BernieD says, "As does real life."

KarenRL says, "But the reporting is interpretative, based on data and
information, so to some extent their interpretation could
be geared toward a particular opinion."

Jan_NS [k-8sci] says, "Krissy, that deals with the importance of
students understanding "the Nature of Science" and
                       part of the science standards."

KrissyL [to Jan]: "Thanks"

JasonWr has disconnected.
BernieD says, "On to another type."

Faith [guest] finds its way in.
Jan_NS [k-8sci] says, "Nature of Science = how science proceeds and how
                       scientists work."

BernieD says, "Take a look at the recently-spiffed up Bones and the Badge."

RyanCK has arrived.
RyanCK's personal recorder (recording) has arrived.
BJ [HelpDesk] shows RyanCK the URL:
  http://webquest.sdsu.edu/dp-science.htm
RyanCK says, "Thank"

RyanCK says, "you"

Becky [guest] exclaims, "This is great! Love the forensic science angle!"

KrissyL exclaims, "WOW - this is cool!"

AdamG says, "This is great."

BernieD says, "When Clarissa teaches this unit, she's got police tape
stretched out all over her classroom just to set the mood."

KarenCl laughs

BernieD says, "It helps that her husband is a cop."

KrissyL exclaims, "The quest itself is great, but the web design is
                   AWESOME as well!"

RuthLH exclaims, "This webquest is fun!"

MeganR says, "Very creative & motivating for the students"

DavidW says, "That's excellent"

Karen [guest] says, "I like the careers angle."

JessicaLL says, "I love this idea"

RyanCK says, "I'll jump on the band wagon too, anything to do with law
and detective work always has been interesting to me."

JuneD says, "Very nice that she has the kids answer questions about
             their role before going on."

KarenCl says, "the only thing missing is the chalked outline of the
               victim"

BernieD asks, "So this is an example of a Mystery task. I think science
lends itself very well to this and I'm surprised that
there aren't more examples like this. Has anyone seen
               another like it?"

ChrissS says, "i think many children want to be policeman at younger
ages, so i think this will be appealing"

RyanCK says, "Although looking at the WebQuest, it might be a little to
              in-depth for them."

BernieD says, "Especially now that police are more respected than, say,
               in 1968."

DavidW nods.
RyanCK exclaims, "But I am sure you would be able to find a way to make
                  it work!"

AdamG says, "Also, a lot of shows on tv are about this topic."

RyanCK asks, "CSI?"

Jan_NS [k-8sci] asks, "how about science "unsolved mysteries"?"

KarenRL says, "Very interesting.  CSI is one my favorites."

larry [guest] finds its way in.
KrissyL says, "I agree - I'm surprised that there wouldn't be more
examples of myster type tasks for science - especially
since children LOVE mysteries & playing "detectives.""

BeverlyK says, "This would be effective even with the Nate the Great
                crowd--in an altered version."

Becky [guest] says, "Reminds me of my interactive X-Files DVD game..."

RyanCK says, "I did enjoy the teacher page aspect with different tidbits
              of helpful information as well."

JuneD says, "Guess we have to write them.."

larry [guest] says, "Larry"

Jan_NS [k-8sci] says, "such as "loch ness monster" or the case of the
"Hanta virus" CDC case several years ago."

DavidW says, "Well, sadly science doesn't always get taught with this
              kind of enthusiasm and interest"

BernieD says, "Well... filling the gap is up to people like us. We need
to point our peers in the right direction to make these
               things happen."

BernieD nods at Jan

KrissyL [to Becky [guest]]: "Not familiar w/ that but would be
                             interested to see . . ."

AdamG says, "I agree people that have expertise in this area will do a
             much better job."

BernieD nods at his wife in the next room.

KarenRL says, "You're right, David.  I would probably love science if it
was presented as a mystery to solve."

DavidW grins at BernieD and his wife.
RyanCK says, "But we also have to take a look at all of the different
              learning styles of students"

DavidW says, "I grew up in a lab coat counting bacteria in a hospital"

BernieD says, "That's the way Nova usually packages it."

KrissyL says, "If any of my students are creating a scientific webquest,
I will encourage them to consider a mystery design
               pattern."

KarenRL thinks it's time to.  . .

Becky [guest] says, "Perhaps this could be applied to the mystery of
fossil evidence? I'm thinking of 2nd-3rd grade
                     curriculum..."

larry [guest] asks, "Hey ... where is my class?"

BernieD says, "Cool."

RyanCK says, "Good connection"

DonnaJF finds her way in.
DonnaJF's personal recorder follows DonnaJF to here.
KrissyL exclaims, "great idea!"

KarenCl says, "i agree Krissy, this is cool"

KarenRL says, "That sounds like a good idea.  I will mention it to my
               coworkers."

RyanCK says, "I think it is about finding these great ideas, and then
having the ability to adapt and modify them to your needs."

AdamG says, "I think it makes sense to tie mystery to scientific theory"

DavidW [to KarenRL]: "But it IS a mystery to solve"

KarenRL says, "True.  I loved Arthur's Tooth for the first grade."

BernieD says, "This would be a good way to deal with pseudo-science,
too. Let's see some WebQuests that get kids probing more
deeply into astrology, reflexology, cattle mutilations,
               etc."

JuneD says, "Yuck"

RyanCK says, "Sounds good"

KarenRL says, "the possibilities are unliminted."

KarenRL says, "oops, unlimited."

Becky [guest] says, "Don't forget crop circles.."

KrissyL says, "I wish I was a kid again"

DavidW [to KarenRL]: "Either way"

FredSt says, "I like the science mystery WebQuest angle too Bernie -
I'll have to think on how I can combine it with Jigsaw
              Grouping."

Jan_NS [k-8sci] says, "science taught well is often using the discovery
method - back to the science process skills."

BeverlyK says, "One person introducing the finished product into a
classroom will get the students enthusiastic and that is
usually what creates change.  Leave out the cattle
mutilations I teach in a rural area."

Travis [guest] finds its way in.
BernieD says, "Tempus is fugiting again... let's take a look at one last
               type."

DavidW laughs.
KarenRL laughs at David's comment.  Thanks.

RyanCK says, "Sorry, I have to make a quick appearence, I have to go to
class.  Best of luck to you all and thank you Bernie for
the great tips and advise I have picked up in the short
              time I was on."

BernieD says, "Bye Ryan. Come back again.,"

RyanCK says, "Will do"

larry [guest] exclaims, "Bye Ryan!!"

Doug [guest] finds its way in.
KrissyL waves to Ryan

BernieD says, "Look at Keith Nuthall's excellent El Nino quest for quick
               bit, please."

RyanCK says, "Bye"

RyanCK has disconnected.
Jan_NS [k-8sci] says, "one of the best science webquests out there, as
are the others that Keith has put together."

BernieD nods

margaret [guest] finds its way in.
Travis [guest] says, "hi margaret"

larry [guest] says, "Hi mArg"

LynneFH says, "yes - we miss him in Poway"

Eriko [guest] says, "I saw this one before in regards to a project I did
                     in class, very good"

Travis [guest] says, "Is doug there"

margaret [guest] exclaims, "Hey Larrrrry!"

Faith [guest] asks, "can we see pictures please?"

Doug [guest] says, "I am here"

Jan_NS [k-8sci] asks, "what is Keith up to these days?"

Becky [guest] says, "Good exercise for interpreting data and making
                     predictions..."

BernieD says, "What I'd like to point out about this one is the fact
that it uses data from the web and has kids doing
prediction based on it. There are other web-based
activities out there that do this, but not many WebQuests.
This is the hole I referred to."

BJ [HelpDesk] shows Faith the URL:
  http://webquest.sdsu.edu/dp-science.htm
JuneD says, "Nice that he has tips to help the students with writing
             their paper."

Jan_NS [to Becky [guest]]: "those science process skills again."

alida [guest] finds its way in.
BeverlyK says, "A wonderful application of relevance to real life."

DavidW [to BernieD]: "Remind me to show you something afterwards"

BernieD says, "Keith is working near Boston for EDC."

LynneFH says, "Keith is in Boston ..."

KrissyL says, "The java applets for the buoys are great."

larry [guest] says, "larry"

Jan_NS [k-8sci] says, "other real-time data sources would fit this
desing very well. such as earthquake data."

LynneFH says, "or near ... :)"

AdamG says, "Great way to learn these important concepts."

DavidW exclaims, "Earthquake data is CLASSIC!"

DavidW says, "REally easy project"

JaniceF says, "Using real data.... There is so much out there."

BernieD says, "Except that you can't do much prediction based on quake
               data."

DavidW says, "Well..."

Jan_NS [k-8sci] says, "oh, yes. I have it all figured out."

DavidW grins.
BernieD asks, "Am I wrong David?"

Faith [guest] exclaims, "Bernie could you please send Margaret the url
window as well?  It was very helpful.  Thank
                         you!"

DavidW listens to Jan_NS [k-8sci].
Becky [guest] says, "Apparently another El Nino is predicted to arrive
                     later this year..."

BJ [HelpDesk] shows margaret the URL:
  http://webquest.sdsu.edu/dp-science.htm
KarenCl asks, "what about volcano activity?"

AdamG says, "I think teachers are just beginning to see the power of
real-time data sites and we need to integrate them as much
as we can in our WebQuests"

Jan_NS [k-8sci] says, "well maybe inferences instead of predictions."

BernieD says, "Thanks BJ. I don't know how you do that thing you do."

DavidW [to KarenCl]: "Excellnet question"

DavidW . o O ( excellent )
KrissyL [to KarenCl]: "Makes sense to me."

Jan_NS [k-8sci] says, "btw, next month K-8 science will be focusing on
