Judi warns you that if he projects a web page will pop up on your screen

LisaCB suddenly disappears.

Judi says, "don't panic it won't log you out."

BernieD asks, "Judi... refresh my memory... how do I show a note?"

SueMR gets Note_23648 from the vending machine.

BernieD projects MatrixNew.

---------------

A month ago I finally put together a new version of the WebQuest matrix. I've been accumulating lots of new URLs and it was getting to the point that I needed to do something different (think different) to get it all together.

So I booted up good old HyperCard and started a database with one WebQuest per card. I created a button with a script that would spit out a new version of the matrix whenever I made changes. It even allows me to copy the e-mail notification I get whenever someone submits a new WebQuest with the online form and paste it into the database with everything in the right fields.

It soon became clear that I had way too many quests for one big matrix, so I broke it up by age level into five subpages.

---------------

BernieD exclaims, "So... I'd like to start by showing that. I'm going to project the page now, so hold on to your mouse and don't panic!"

BernieD projects MatrixNewP.

---------------

Here's the menu that lets you get to each of the new sub pages.

---------------

BernieD projects the URL:

http://webquest.sdsu.edu/matrix.html

Judi asks, "everyone get that ok?"

JMP [guest] says, "Yes"

Mike [guest] says, "Yes.""

ShirleyYC says, "yes"

SueMR says, "yes"

Kathy [guest] says, "yes"

MichaelAH [ED's Oasis] arrives from nowhere.

m'srecorder follows MichaelAH to here.

TerrieG admires the menu page

KateR says, "yes"

BernieD says, "Great... let's look more closely at one of the grade levels."

KateR says, "Have bookedmarked"

LeonardaB says, "How about third grade"

BernieD projects MatrixHS.

---------------

Here's what the matrix of high school WebQuests looks like.

---------------

BernieD projects the URL:

http://webquest.sdsu.edu/9-12matrix.html

Judi says, "very nice table"

Judi says, "nice use of color"

BernieD says, "Take a moment to scroll around, but don't click away or we'll never get you back."

JuneAD says, "but it's nice to see what the task is in each WQ project."

KateR says, "easily understandable and readable"

Judi is excited to see some PE ones

JMP [guest] says, "I appreciate the way you 'tag' new webquests"

BernieD says, "Everything tagged NEW is since October 8. I'll probably call things new for a month or so."

BernieD asks, "Ready to look over one of the new ones?"

JMP [guest] says, "yes"

KateR says, "good to see Life"

Mike [guest] says, "yes""

KateR says, "Skills and careers"

JaneBr <- Yes>

BernieD projects EG.Mythology.

---------------

Here's a newly submitted example. It's called Create Your Own Mythology

---------------

BernieD projects the URL:

http://sites.netscape.net/amywehrman/mywebquest.htm

SueMR says, "wonderful classifications and grade specific organization"

DavidLF BookMarks like crazy!

BernieD says, "Take a few minutes to look this one over and then let's discuss it."

JaneBr says, "This is exciting"

KateR says, "I immediately scrolled down to Evaluation...that's what I have to justify the most"

KateR says, "the member evaluation is so important"

DavidLF exclaims, "Major Cool, Bernie!"

JMP [guest] says, "Great 'question chart'. It will help to keep the learners focused."

DavidLF cheers for Bernie

SueMR madly inserts all those links into her notepad.

BernieD says, "This was created, I think, by one of Neal Strudler's online students from his UNLV course."

Mike [guest] says, "I appreciate the creative aspects of the Quest. This will allow students to really show aspects of their personality.""

JuneAD says, "She has provided a variety of sites - but not too many."

AnneMc has arrived.

Anne's Recorder (recording) has arrived.

SueMR says, "well done"

BernieD asks, "There's an interesting continuum between being too open ended and not enough. Where do you think this one fits?"

SueMR says, "just right"

KateR says, "images in Western Art are nice and often so hard to find in the school library"

Mike [guest] says, "I think the open-endedness of the project is appropriate because of the subject matter.""

JaneBr says, "Good question. Not ready to answer it yet."

KateR says, "it does not seem to present problems for the religious Fundamentalists"

JMP [guest] says, "Open-ended, but also structured enough to provide focus."

JuneAD asks, "Is it mainly retelling?"

BernieD asks, "It's interesting to bring creativity into a topic that has such strong traditional roots. I wonder if kids would get their own mythology mixed up with the real one, to the detriment of our common cultural literacy. (Playing devil's advocate here). Any comments?"

SueMR asks, "Is it using the the information in a new way?"

BernieD says, "hmmm.... I smell some gears turning."

BJB says, "I think the kids would benefit by being able to see what meaning the gods had to the culture that created them..."

Mike [guest] says, "Hmmm...I think at least a cursory understanding of classical mythology would be necessary to successfully complete the project.""

AnneMc has disconnected.

JudyHM has lost her link.

DavidLF says, "structured enough but still, kids can construct their own mythology from the links...a cross between a fantasy world and Fact...interesting Hmmmm"

BernieD says, "It's always good to let kids put their own stamp on things."

BernieD asks, "So... in general, we like it?"

DavidLF cheers

JMP [guest] says, "Yes."

Mike [guest] says, "yes...quite nice.""

DavidLF says, "Vygotsky cheers"

JuneAD says, "I think I would like it to have a bit more detail in the process though."

KateR says, "yes, and I like the absence of too much detail"

KateR says, "perhaps a create your own myth aspect"

BernieD asks, "Ready to examine another?"

KateR says, "yes"

Mike [guest] says, "Sure.""

JaneBr says, ""Yes"

JuneAD says, "nods"

BernieD projects EG.Cinderella.

---------------

Here's one designed for upper elementary kids. Cinderella: A New Twist on

an Old Tale.

---------------

BernieD projects the URL:

http://www.richmond.edu/~ed344/webquests/cinderella/Cinderella.html

TerrieG goes home.

JMP [guest] says, "I'm glad you picked this one. I came across it last night."

DavidLF bookmarks

JuneAD says, "I like this one."

JuneAD says, "a neat twist."

DavidLF exclaims, "Cool!"

KateR says, "nice idea and just enough versions"

Kathleen_Katterman [guest] has arrived.

BernieD says, "This one is from Patricia Stohr-Hunt's class at the U of Richmond. She manages to get wonderful work out of undergrads."

Mike [guest] says, "Very clever idea. A universally known story used to springboard understanding of different cultures. Great!""

SueMR says, "interesting"

Kathy [guest] says, "I'm still back on the first webquest. I'm wondering about the author's intended learning outcomes. When I looked through the rubric I got the sence that all she was looking for was collaboration skills. What about outcomes related to English Language Arts? How would the writing be assessed? And, how about the ability to use traditional works as models when creating new literature? THese are some of the abilities I'd like the rubrics to get at."

BernieD says, "It's interesting that this one is designed for 5th grade, and the other one we just looked at was for 9th. With minor modifications each could go the other way, I think."

DavidLF agrees with Bernie

Judi [to Bernie]: "would you like to address Kathy's question now or come back to it.... (We should try and focus on one topic at a time)"

Mike [guest] says, "It certainly seems that way.""

BernieD says, "Agreed, Kathy guest."

JuneAD says, "This one has a neat twist to get at a topic - and does a nice job of defining and helping the students with their roles."

ShirleyYC says, "i was thinking the same thing"

JuneAD says, "This one doesn't have a rubric - perhaps the author would add something once they have used it with students."

BernieD says, "My guess is that she had English goals but didn't get to articulate them in the time she had. It's a curse of these course projects that they get finished 5 minutes before they're due."

JaneBr asks, "Do Webquests have to have rubrics?"

Mike [guest] says, "I can testify to that.""

BernieD says, "Ideally, yes."

SueMR asks, "What grade level would this quest be geared to?"

BernieD says, "Or an observation protocol if that's more appropriate. But most need something more than a quiz to evaluate."

KateR says, "I just do not want my students' required work to seem like 'busy work.'"

JuneAD says, "Something to help the students know what they are expected to do - and to help the teacher assign grades."

BernieD says, "This one is supposed to be 5th grade, I think."

JuneAD says, "testing"

BernieD says, "5th, I think."

Mike [guest] says, "...am I still connected?""

JuneAD has lost her link.

BernieD says, "Ah... a little ripple in The Force."

SallyL asks, "Am I still signed on?"

Judi says, "sorry"

Judi says, "Looks like we're all still here."

SallyL says, "I do not see a comment after SueMR"

Judi asks people to do a quick nod

JaneBr projects ASO Bookmarks.

BernieD says, "nod nod"

SueMRnods

Mike [guest] says, "nod""

JMP [guest] says, "nod"

MichaelAH [ED's Oasis] nods

ShirleyYC nod

SueMR nods

Judi says, "looks like our Network Hiccoughed......"

Kathy [guest] nods

BernieD says, "We can blame it on El Nino."

Judi says, "sorry about that."

KateR says, "nod"

Kathleen_Katterman [guest] says, "nod"

DanB [Help Desk] nods

BernieD asks, "Shall we forge on?"

SallyL waves

Mike [guest] says, "sure.""

Judi says, "forge away"

BernieD says, "One of the things I've been enjoying lately is getting new quests in the mail every day. I set up a new form on the page for people to submit things, and they're actually doing it at the rate of 2 a day or so."

JaneBr gets Note_23650 from the vending machine.

BernieD says, "Here's the new page that made that so..."

BernieD projects the URL:

http://webquest.sdsu.edu/community.html

BernieD says, "Under Share Your WebQuest, there's an online form to fill in. It's netting me some great stuff."

JuneAD has connected.

BernieD says, "I hope that y'all will consider making use of that when you've got something you'd like to share."

MichaelAH [ED's Oasis] leaves for the CAFE.

M'srecorder (recording) leaves for the CAFE.

Mike [guest] says, "That's a nice feature.""

BernieD says, "Why don't we open the floor up to questions and comments now."

KateR says, "Will there be a way for me to get this chat e-mailed to me? I am afraid I have to leave soon and i do not want to miss a thing."

BJB really likes the TAPPED IN part

Judi [to Kate]: "yes..."

Judi holds up a BIG sign: If you are a guest and want a transcript please say your email address

Kathy [guest] says, "kverzoni@mohonasen.org"

Mike [guest] says, "mdilisio@indiana.edu""

KateR says, "Judi, kmr4@ra.msstate.edu"

Kathleen_Katterman [guest] says, "kk7owat@moa.net"

JMP [guest] says, "gjporritt@cableregina.com"

Judi looks around for Questions for Bernie

DavidLF teleports to the reception.

JeffC arrives from nowhere.

BernieD asks, "Reception? Is there food there?"

Judi didn't mean to distract you fromthe conversation

Mike [guest] says, "Bernie, you asked a question earlier that made me think. Do you think that an open ended WebQuest is prone to creating frustration in students?""

BernieD says, "Thinking is our friend. It depends..."

KateR goes OUT.

BernieD says, "Some kids (and teachers) need more structure than others.

The art of doing things well is to know where to draw that line."

JaneBr has lost her link.

BernieD says, "A totally open-ended task would frustrate some and lead to a lot of wheel spinning and lost time. But others won't perk up until they can make it their own."

JuneAD nods

BernieD says, "I know this first hand. When I'm given a routine memo to write for a committee, I waste a lot of time not doing it until I can come up with a way to give it my own spin. I'm hopeless that way."

JMP [guest] says, "Bernie, do you have any tips on introducing students to their first WebQuest experience:"

Mike [guest] says, "That really seems to me to be the question. How can a student have a feeling of ownership, if the process is strictly laid out?""

BernieD says, "JMP... I'd let them first do easier things like exploring a hot list. In fact..."

BernieD says, "I'm struggling with that issue right now. What kind of WebQuest-Lite would best prepare kids to do the"

BernieD asks, "real thing... and provide an easier first step for a teacher to create?"

BernieD says, "My present guess is that a short-term task, with few links to explore and no product other than a rich classroom discussion... that would be a good place to start."

SueMR says, "How about Filamentality"

JMP [guest] says, "Thanks"

BernieD says, "Seems to work for many. Some find it confining."

Mike [guest] says, "I'm not familiar with this...""

BernieD says, "Filamentality was developed by the SDSU/Pac Bell team as a way to help teachers get started in this"

LeonardaB says, "I think it is good for teachers who are just beginning to use the internet as a tool for their students."

ShirleyYC says, "I do think that working with WebQuest can be progressive in nature... In other words start with one not so involved and work up to the more diverse"

BernieD says, "arena. It's a set of online forms that generates the web pages for you and provides guidance along the way."

Mike [guest] says, "I see...thanks.""

Kathleen_Katterman [guest] says, "I've created about 10 Filamentality hotlist lessons."

Judi says, "it's a nice way to learn about the process of making a webQuest"

Judi . o O ( in my opinion )

Kathleen_Katterman [guest] says, "It was a good way to start."

BernieD says, "The URL is something like: http://www.kn.pacbell.com/wired/fil/

SueMR says, "Filamentality is a fill-in-the-blank interactive Web site that guides you through picking a topic, searching the Web,"

Kathy [guest] says, "I like to see learning experiences where the process is less structured and the expectations for the end-product are clearly specified. It is important that the teacher can clearly articulate the knowledge and skills that he/she expects students to gain from the experience. THe teacher should also be able to related the knowledge/skills to state or national learning standards."

BernieD asks, "Agreed on most of it. Why don't you like detailed processes, Kathy?"

LeonardaB says, "That may be good for older grades, but in the primary you need structure."

JuneAD nods

Judi looks around

ShirleyYC asks, "Have you had any WebQuest that were created by the students themselves (not grad, or undergrad)?"

SallyL asks, "Judi how do I print this recorded session to my E-Mail?"

BernieD says, "There are variations in how experienced teachers are in pulling these things off. To me it seems that a detailed process description helps the novice teacher know what to do.

They can always do it their own way if the rest of the lesson is good."

Kathy [guest] says, "I like to get kids used to managing their own "getting there". I think it's a great workplace skill. In the workplace we value workers that we can set free on tasks and feel confident that they will get it done."

BernieD says, "Shirley... there was a Challenge Grant in Salt Lake City that made that the centerpiece of the project. Kids worked with the teachers to create the lessons."

JuneAD says, "A few of the students in the class have provided variations of their projects - working in a lab, individual computers, etc."

JMP [guest] says, "Sometimes teachers need structure too, especially when we are just getting out feet wet"

Kathleen_Katterman [guest] has disconnected.

JuneAD says, "Kathy - I think that's great - but they need of course some training or practice befor etheya re let loose."

SallyL says, "Whisper Judi I thought it was great. It's 9:55 here and 5:15 comes early. Thanks again."

Judi waves to Sally....

BernieD says, "It's a developmental process. At the end, we want kids to be independent knowledge workers, but until they're ready for that they'll need a degree of scaffolding and support. It's easier to write a lesson with more of that and ignore what you don't need than to go in the opposite direction."

BernieD asks, "Well... shall we all meet again next month?"

Judi has an announcment

BernieD says, "The floor is Judi's."

Judi holds up a BIG sign: I'm looking for two people to help review webquests created by a Master's level class in Missouri

Kathy [guest] agrees. Yes, we can always remove structure as we see that learners are ready

SueMR says, "WH bye bye and Thanks"

Judi [to Bernie]: "we look forwward to your next discussion online in TAPPED IN."

Mike [guest] says, "Thanks!""

JMP [guest] says, "Thanks, this was great. I will come back"

Judi [to Bernie]: "wonderful and informative as usual"

DanB [Help Desk] waves bye

BernieD exclaims, "Tnx!"

Kathy [guest] says, "Thanks to everyone. This was really neat."

BJB says, "thanks, Bernie and June"

ShirleyYC exclaims, "thank you!"

Judi holds up a BIG sign: You'd just have to review one wq

SueMR says, "Thank you so much Bernie. This is quite a learning experience."

SueMR has disconnected.

Judi says, "email me fusco@tappedin.sri.com if you have questions about anything TAPPED IN related"

BernieD says, "Better offer money, J."

Judi grins at Bernie

BernieD exclaims, "OK... bon nuit!"

LeonardaB says, "Thanks, I'll try to return next month.""

Judi says, "Thanks for coming"

JMP [guest] has disconnected.

BernieD has lost his link.
