you mean a situation in which the learners do not meet face to face). The problem
with getting people to interact with each other in an online course is that
the tasks we give them are usually academic and not very engaging. A WebQuest
could provide a meaningful task to get them talking and thinking together.

I'll bet there are some overlaps. The basic thing that distinguishes WebQuests
from many other things is that it's about higher level thinking wrapped around
a task. It isn't pure inquiry because the links and the problem or question
are pre-determined by the teacher. It does prepare students well for more open-ended
inquiry later, I think.

this an extremely complex task...challenging for sure...but you must provide
twice or even three times the scaffolding needed in a normal quest...I am right

to predict all that is going to happen in a foreign language quest and what
scaffolding exercises you need...so you create them as things go by...and include

Em príncipio, wq's não colocam desafios técnicos (de uso
da Web ou de computadores) para os alunos. Eventualmente, algumas wq's exigem
que a tarefa seja trabalhada com utilização de ferramentas informáticas.
Nesses casos, se os alunos não dominam bem os instrumentos, a própria
wq deve sugerir casminhos de aprendizagem.

method to develop awareness of a topic and have them answer factual recall type
questions. It seems to me that if you make the questions more open-ended, you
can have a class discussion that is more high level. In any case, you need to
be sure to have the students evaluate the sources of information as they look
at them.

sites is a good idea, especially for older learners. But that's not what WebQuests
are about. There's a parallel track of learning that takes place that involves
research skills and I don't have much light to shed on that.

develop WebQuests but I haven’t seen it done successfully yet. To be a
good WebQuest, it has to involve good pedagogy and that’s something that
kids don’t know much about. Kids do have more time than adults, so perhaps
they’d be better at finding good links. On the other hand, here in the
US people worry about kids seeing adult sites, so having them search freely
isn’t a great idea either.

is one of the most important predictors of success. The key is to create interdependence
among students, and that involves dividing tasks so that everyone has a necessary
role to play. Too often, learners are working in parallel and don't really need
to listen to each other. The real learning takes place when students teach each
other away from the computer. I would recommend that you look at books by Robert
Slavin or the Johnson brothers for more detail on cooperative learning. You're
right: it's a key topic.

outcomes really are. There is a project in Missouri called eMINTS that has shown
that scores on standardized tests have gone up in classrooms that used techniques
like WebQuests. I think that if WebQuests didn't exist, people would be using
the internet a bit less intelligently because they forget what they already
know about teaching. Only time will tell.

that. We have an experimental classroom with wireless laptops. We're going to
compare two sections of a class about Human Sexuality. They'll both be doing
WebQuests, but we'll change the degree of cooperative learning across the two
sections and learn what difference it makes. If we compare WebQuest vs. non-WebQuest,
you'd have to control a whole lot of variables in order to make the comparison
valid.
